Not only is making your own almond milk SUPER easy, but it’s cheaper and you get a milk that has NOTHING artificial in it!!
Many believe that they are making the healthier choice by purchasing almond milk instead of milk, but they don’t realize that there are ingredients on the label that aren’t so fabulous.
Added Sugar
First of all, if you are buying regular almond milk, not the unsweetened kind, you are drinking 7-10 grams of added sugar per cup. This also bumps your calories from 30-40 calories per cup to 60-80…these number really depend on the brand! So, if you have to buy your almond milk, make sure it is unsweetened, and if you want it a little sweeter, add a couple drops of stevia!
Carrageenan
Carrageenan is simply a thickening agent that allows the almond milk not to separate…if you’ve ver made your own, then you know that i’m talking about. Unfortunately carrageenan has been linked to inflammation, digestive issues, and even cancer. Your body reacts to carrageenan the way that it does salmonella…not a good thing!
So, how do you make your own?
Ingredients:
- 1 cup raw almonds (soaked for 8-12 hours if possible
- 4 cups filtered Water (not your soaking water)
- Optional: stevia, dates, honey, cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa, vanilla
Directions:
- Simply blend your ingredients together and strain through a nut milk bag or cheese cloth!
Soaking your nuts and seeds makes them easier for your body to digest and allows you to get the optimum nutrition.
Worried about waste?! Don’t throw your pulp away, use it to make breads, cookies, protein bars, or mugcakes!
